Description
This image was taken after a night game at Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs major league baseball team. The last of the fans can be seen streaming down the lower interior ramp on their way out of the park. And for those who didn't get their fill of ballpark food, there's a Mickey D's right across the street, or at least there was in 2013 when this image was taken; major renovations to the area and to the park are now underway, and I am not sure that the McDonald's is still there.
Chicago's Wrigley Field, built in 1914, is a Chicago landmark. It is the second oldest ballpark in major league baseball, and was the last to get lights, in 1988. Before that, all games there were played during the day. Interestingly, lights had actually been placed in the ballpark for installation in 1941, but then-owner P.K. Wrigley instead donated the steel to a shipyard for the war effort on the day after Pearl Harbor.
In 2016, the Cubs ended 108 years of frustration for their long-suffering fans by winning the World Series in seven games over the Cleveland Indians. The win broke the longest championship drought of any major North American professional sports team. The Cubs' last previous World Series championship had been in 1908.
