The Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) is perhaps the most common hawk in North America, with a range stretching from interior Alaska throughout Canada and the lower 48 United States into Mexico and parts of Central America.
This is a portrait of Ranger, a Red-tailed Hawk that was unfortunately struck by a car while hunting, sustaining an injury that left him unable to return to the wild. Today, Ranger resides at the Kensington Metropark Nature Center in southeastern Michigan, where he serves as an “educational ambassador,” enabling visitors the opportunity to meet him and learn more about him. A texture and various digital processing techniques were applied to the image for enhanced artistic effect.

After six years as a Chicago area transplant living in East Central Michigan, I returned in 2022 to to a new home in the far Northwest Chicago suburbs.
